Actually you have to take IELTS UKVI which is designed specifically for UK visa , it's the same test but video recorded session. As a general admissions requirement for most of the UK universities, you need 6.5 overal band with no band less than 6.0 for post graduate degrees and 6.0 band overall with no band less than 5.5 for undergraduate degrees.

However many universities now started waiving off the IELTS result based on the 12th standard English language score. If anybody has English score more than 65 % or sometimes 75% then they don't ask for IELTS.

If a student got his CAS letter and wants to file tier -4 visa without IELTS, then it's very much okey.

As per the home office guidelines, IELTS is not mandatory as long as you have a place in the institutions.

However if you take IELTS before your visa appointment or before your travel date is always good.
